Maker Garage Training Courses
Courses currently available are listed in the VCU Schedule of Classes:
- ENGR111 – Innovation Shop Training I
- ENGR211 – Innovation Shop Training II
- ENGR311 – Innovation Shop Training III
Level I:
Basic Shop Safety Training Course. The primary focus of this course is on Shop Guidelines, Protocols and Rules including an introduction to basic hand/power tools and bench mounted power equipment.
Description:
Level I provides entry-level training associated with shop safety, measuring techniques, layout tools, and use of general and powered hand tools. Students learn drilling, sanding, sawing, and other basic shop techniques. An exam and project will be assigned upon training completion, and is part of the shop practicum activities. Students must achieve a minimum score of 76% in all areas to obtain machine shop certification Level I. Upon successfully completion of Level I certification, students may pursue Level II certification in the same semester, if time permits. Level I certification provides students with general shop access.
Level II:
Basic Fabrication Techniques and Equipment coupled with introductory inspection and measurement methods. Equipment utilized consists of a floor mounted drill press, industrial bandsaws (horizontal & vertical), tap and dies, and belt sanders.
Description:
Level II provides intermediate level training on shop safety, blueprint/schematic reading, and precision measuring. Students will learn advanced equipment knowledge associated with drilling, sawing, and thread cutting operations. An exam and project will be assigned upon training completion, and is part of the shop practicum activities. Students must achieve a minimum score of 76% in all areas to obtain machine shop certification Level II. Once the student successfully completes Level II certification, they may pursue Level III certification in the same semester, if time permits.
Level III:
Manual Mill and Lathe Operation
Description:
Level III provides introductory level training on manual mill and lathe setup and operation. Project assignments will be assigned at training completion, and is part of the shop practicum activities. Students must achieve a minimum score of 76% in these activities to obtain machine shop certification Level III.
Upon completion of all training modules, students may be eligible to become innovation space trainers. If interested, they should contact Boris Solomonov – bsolomonov@vcu.edu.

Students of various skill sets work in this space on a daily basis. We encourage a collaborative learning and training environment, therefore, the need for Makerspace trainers to assist new students in their endeavors to understand and operate shop equipment safely becomes paramount. As a trainer, you must be knowledgeable on all equipment in order to provide appropriate guidance and experience to educate others safely. Being a trainer not only gives you the opportunity to help others and develop your skills, you also become a leader among your peers.
